Every Team Has a Story. Share Yours.

Sports journalism is not simply retelling the events of any given game - or any given season. It's more than that.

Covering sports is endeavoring to provide your audience the full story. It's not only chronicling the games, but what happens between them. It's helping fans understand the context in which the competition takes place so that they can fully appreciate it.

The Minnesota Vikings and Star Tribune want to help you share the story of your school's football team with Students on the Sidelines. In addition to publishing a select number of stories on Star Tribune.com and in the Star Tribune newspaper, we're asking high school students to create and post stories about their school's football team on TikTok.

We're asking you to share stories about what makes your school's team special. The history. The players. The coaches. The context that most fans don't get to see.

Share them on TikTok using the hashtag #studentsonthesidelines. We'll reward the creators of the best stories with tickets to a Minnesota Vikings home game and a special tour of TCO Performance Center, home of the Minnesota Vikings.

Here's a few things to know before you get started:

  • Each week, we'll offer story ideas at startribune.com/studentsonthesidelines and on our TikTok channel.
  • When conducting an interview, make sure that your subject knows they are being interviewed. An easy way to do that is to open your video with something like: "My name is <your name>, and I'm interviewing <subject's name> for Students on the Sidelines."
  • There's an art to telling a good story. We asked Star Tribune's Vikings Beat reporter, Ben Goessling, and Vikings Entertainment Network's on-air talent, Tatum Everett, and writer and editor, Lindsey Young, to share their approach to Sports journalism. You can find that content here.
  • Since social media stories will be posted and shared on TikTok, their terms of use apply.
  • The winning TikTok stories will be selected by members of the Star Tribune's sports journalism team.
  • The program runs from September 1, 2023 until November 27, 2023.
